Former Manchester United and Ajax goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is predicting a tough few months for Christian Eriksen following his move to Tottenham Hotspur.

A much-publicised transfer window for Eriksen resulted in the Dane leaving Van der Sar's old club Ajax for White Hart Lane on a five-year deal.

Eriksen came in with three Premier League games completed, and missed out on Tottenham's loss at north London rivals Arsenal.

And Van der Sar, who attended Spurs' 1-0 defeat and knows his fair share about English football, insists Eriksen will need more time than someone of the stature of new Arsenal signing Mesut Ozil – bought for a club record €50m.

"Last week I was at the Arsenal-Tottenham game and it is a game played at a punishing pace up and down", Van der Sar told Dutch daily De Telegraaf as saying.

"Eriksen is a great footballer, but with the game's tremendous pace, he will have some problems in the beginning.

"Holland remains a springboard for players to get to the Premier League or other major leagues.

"But Ozil is nearly four years older than Eriksen, who at 21, has further development to go through in England."
