Arsenal may have sown the seeds of a January move for Hellas Verona midfielder Jorginho by initiating contact with the player's representatives, according to Tutto Mercato.

Jorginho has already been linked with Liverpool alongside Fiorentina, while Borussia Dortmund got themselves in the mix last weekend.

However, Arsenal may well have taken a big step by getting in touch with his representatives when the player was reportedly in London last week.

Even though the contact is believed to have been very informal, Fiorentina will be keeping their ear close to the ground over the talented 21-year-old after the development.

His 41 appearances for Verona in Serie B last season brought him to the fore, with Liverpool putting in an £8m bid in the last transfer window.

While Verona will be keen to retain Jorginho for footballing reasons – they were promoted to Serie A last season – financial aspects could force a sale in January.

Jorginho's contract runs until 2016, and it remains to be seen if Arsenal will shore up their interest with a formal bid.

The Gunners pulled off the big-money signing of Mesut Ozil on deadline day last month, but their total number of full signings was just three – Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini the other two.

Meanwhile, Jorginho has already made seven appearances in Serie A this season, with his three goals helping Verona reach the heady heights of fifth place.
