Gaston Ramirez has asked his agent to secure an exit from Southampton, with a return to Italy's Serie A the Uruguayan's preferred exit route.

The attack-minded midfielder has struggled to secure a regular starting spot under Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino and the player's agent has admitted that his client is not enjoying life under the former Espanyol coach.

And with the January transfer window quickly approaching, Ramirez is eagerly eyeing the exit door.

Indeed, according to Tutto Mercato, the ex-Bologna man wants to return to the happier hunting grounds of Serie A and has asked his entourage to line up the deal.

Ramirez first moved to Italy in 2010, swapping Uruguayan giants Penarol for Bologna.

Rated as one of the most exciting prospects in world football, Southampton were considered to have scored a coup when they captured the midfielder in 2012 for around £12m.

The Saints are thought to be willing to hold the door open for a Ramirez exit and will accept a deal with payments structured over a multi-year basis.

The 22-year-old is believed to interest Inter, Fiorentina, Napoli and Roma.
