Manchester United are cutting the figures of serious suitors when it comes to Sporting Lisbon starlet William Carvalho.

The young midfielder has shone at the Portuguese league leaders, causing scouts to flock over the the Estadio Jose Alvalade to take in his performances.

Interest from both Manchester United and Arsenal is well-known, but it has now emerged that the former are growing increasingly serious in their admiration of the 21-year-old.

Indeed, according to Portuguese daily Record, the Red Devils have had Carvalho scouted on six separate occasions this term.

Sporting Lisbon are now braced for a formal bid from the English champions in the January transfer window.

The Portuguese giants will not be keen to lose the starlet, especially during a season in which they are putting together a real tilt at the Primeira Liga title.

In another sign of his progress, Carvalho won his first senior Portugal cap under coach Paulo Bento in the recent World Cup playoff tie against Sweden in November.
