Liverpool have emphatically turned down Napoli's approach for defender Daniel Agger.

Rafael Benitez's Serie A side had contacted Liverpool to test the water over taking Agger on loan for the second half of the season.

It had been felt Liverpool might be willing to allow the Dane to leave due to their wealth of options in central defence.

But according to Sky Italia, Liverpool have wasted little time in informing Napoli that they are not prepared to consider a loan, or even an outright sale.

Napoli have been keen to snap up a new centre-back for some time and failed with a move for Agger's team-mate Martin Skrtel in the summer.

Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen and Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen have been mooted as alternatives, however Napoli are now more likely to approach Marseille for Nicolas N'Koulou.

They may meet with disappointment there too though, as N'Koulou has already ruled out a January move.
