Manchester United were understood to have made some approaches for the midfielder, but Roma were able to thwart the same.

They will look to seal Pjanic's stay until 2019 with a wage hike and the signature is expected to be made in early January.

His salary is expected to rise to around €3m per year, this in a season where he has scored three goals in 16 Serie A games.

Pjanic also capped his league form this year by helping Bosnia and Herzegovina qualify for a historic World Cup.

And he had been keen on extending his stay with the capital club, saying in early November: "I'm very happy. I know the club. I'm open to extending."
