Montpellier president Louis Nicollin has defended his €15m valuation of midfielder Remy Cabella, after knocking back a bid of €8m from Newcastle United.

Cabella is gearing up to leave the Stade de la Mosson this summer, having already bid farewell to the southern France outfit, and a number of clubs have enquired about his availability.

Nicollin is ready to grant the 24-year-old's wish, but only on terms which suit the Ligue 1 side.

And with Marseille having paid €15m to sign Florian Thauvin from Lille last summer, the president believes a precedent of sorts has been set.

"OM bought Thauvin for €15m and he isn't as good as Cabella", Nicollin told Midi Libre, sticking to his guns.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle choose to increase their offer of €8m for Cabella, who scored 14 goals in 37 Ligue 1 games for Montpellier in the recently-concluded season.
