Liverpool are closing the transfer net around Southampton defender Dejan Lovren after reaching an agreement on a £20m fee for the 25-year-old.

The Reds have been chasing Lovren throughout the summer, but Southampton were reluctant to part with the Croatia international centre-back.

However, according to the BBC, a breakthrough has now been made and Lovren will undergo a medical with Liverpool this weekend, ahead of sealing the switch.

Lovren, who only joined the Saints last summer, has publicly pushed for a move and claimed "my head is already at Liverpool".

The former Lyon defender's public comments angered Southampton, who have now decided the time is right for the player to move on.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has already made two signings from Southampton this summer, in the form of Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, with Lovren set to become the third.

The Reds recently banked £75m from selling Luis Suarez to Barcelona, while they also have funds from their return to the Champions League to spend.
