Former Birmingham City striker Nikola Zigic insists Arsenal did make an approach for his services, before they opted to sign Danny Welbeck from Manchester United.

Zigic's agent confirmed as the transfer clock ticked down that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had been in touch over signing the 33-year-old, who turned out in the Championship with Birmingham last term, before parting ways this summer after a four-year spell.

Wenger later denied being in for Zigic, but the player himself insists that Arsenal were an option, although the Gunners ended their interest when they paid £16m to sign Welbeck from Manchester United, another player Wenger denied interest in.

"My agent was talking with Arsenal but they finally opted for another player", he told IB Times.

"We talked with them until the last days of the market.

"I am very happy because Arsenal had me on their list. I would have like it [sic]. But big teams always consider several alternatives [before signing a player]."

Zigic, who is a free agent and as such able to move outside the transfer window system, is now on the lookout for another club to join and claims he has several irons in the fire.

"I am still looking [at] options. We're talking to several clubs and I think we will make a decision soon."
