Sporting Lisbon coach Marco Silva admits that Arsenal target William Carvalho might move to the Premier League in January.

The 22-year-old Portugal international was extensively linked with a move to Manchester United last season, while Arsenal saw a bid for his services in the summer come up short.

Since then the Gunners have continued to track the defensive midfielder’s progress in Portugal and have been linked with rekindling their interest in him next month.

The Gunners are looking for a tough-tackling midfielder and believe Carvalho has the potential to become a top class midfield general in the future.

The Sporting Lisbon boss admits that Premier League teams are keeping a close eye on the Portuguese international and has indicated that a transfer in January may well happen.

"William is a target for English teams, but I want him to play his game”, Silva said in a press conference ahead of Sporting Lisbon's Champions League clash with Chelses.

"He's not playing at the same level as last season because last season he was a surprise, but he's improving.

"William has many offers. Let's wait until January."

The 22-year-old has so far clocked up 15 appearances for Sporting Lisbon this season and has also earned nine caps for Portugal.
