Manchester United have failed with a bid of €150m for Real Madrid pair Gareth Bale and Raphael Varane, it has been claimed in Spain.

The Red Devils are keen on bringing Bale back to England, while it appears Varane has emerged as a centre-back target for boss Louis van Gaal, who has been frustrated in attempts to sign Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund and Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia.

Earlier today it emerged that Bale and Varane are the only two players Real Madrid have so far received offers for.

And according to Cuatro, cited by Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo, both are wanted by Manchester United.

Los Blancos knocked back the proposal, but are aware Manchester United are threatening to stand firm over not allowing goalkeeper David de Gea to head to the Bernabeu unless there is movement.

The Red Devils will at a minimum demand either Varane or Bale head to Old Trafford if De Gea moves to Real Madrid.

Los Blancos have set their face against losing either player though, meaning a long summer of negotiations lies ahead.
