Mateo Kovacic won't rule out swapping Inter for Liverpool this summer, though is keen to stress he has only just penned a contract extension with the Nerazzurri.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is desperate to add Kovacic to his midfield options, but the English side have at present refused to meet Inter's asking price for the Croatia international.

Further developments are expected later this month, but Kovacic will not push for the switch to happen and has insisted he is committed to Inter and wants to stay.

The midfielder has, encouragingly for Liverpool, left the door open however.

He told Sky Italia, when asked about Liverpool: "I signed a new contract some months ago and I want to stay here.

"Right now, yes [I want to stay], but you can never say never."

Liverpool are aiming to fill the void left by the departure of long-serving captain Steven Gerrard this summer and smell gold in Kovacic.

The Reds have fond memories of raiding Inter for midfield talent, having snapped up Philippe Coutinho from the Nerazzurri in the January 2013 transfer window.

It remains to be seen whether they can repeat the trick this year.
