Nicola Salerno has paid tribute to Leeds United after leaving his position as sporting director at Elland Road.

The Italian arrived at Leeds last year, brought in by the club's owner Massimo Cellino, who had employed him when he owned Cagliari.

Salerno had a key role in the club's transfer policy and the arrival of a clutch of players from Italy. His final act for the club was to seal the permanent signing of centre-back Sol Bamba from Palermo.

The deal-maker left Leeds by mutual consent last week, despite having a further year to run on his contract with the Whites.

And he insists that he cherishes the chance to have worked at Elland Road.

Salerno took to Twitter to write: "It was a great honor for me to have worked in this great historical club!"

Recently Salerno has been linked with taking over as sporting director at another English club, Watford.

The Hornets earned promotion from the Championship to the Premier League last season and are looking to bolster their squad for the forthcoming campaign.
