Zenit Saint-Petersburg have insisted that Tottenham Hotspur linked midfielder Axel Witsel has a release clause of €100m, in an apparent effort to warn off potential suitors.

The midfielder’s future at Zenit has been a source of speculation all summer and a number of clubs are said to be keen to take him away from Russia.

AC Milan have a long term interest in the midfielder and have been in talks to take him to Italy this summer, but are yet to reach an agreement.

And there has been speculation that Premier League giants Tottenham are also showing late interest in the Belgium international.

In a statement released through Russian news agency TASS, the club said: “The Belgian is still a Zenit player.

“We have repeatedly said that he has a release clause and it is worth €100m.”

Witsel played a key role in Zenit winning the league title last season and coach Andre-Villas Boas is not keen to lose such an important player at such a late stage of the transfer window.
