Rangers manager Mark Warburton has insisted that he won’t rush Martyn Waghorn back into action despite calls for him to return to the team for the Celtic clash.

Waghorn has been out of action since mid-February after sustaining a knee injury, and the forward said last week if things go according to plan he could be in contention for selection in the Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic later this month.

Rangers fans would love to see their top goalscorer in the team to face their eternal rivals, but Warburton insisted that it is important that he remains cautious with Waghorn’s return.

He admits that the forward is working hard to get himself fit, but Warburton insisted that as long as the Waghorn is not match fit, he will not rush him back into action for the Gers.

On the possibility of Waghorn playing against Celtic, the Rangers boss said in a press conference: “The semi-final is two weeks away, Martyn has been out for a number of weeks.

“People are saying he should be back when he is fit; Martyn has been working tremendously hard, a top class professional, but he has to get himself match fit as well.

“What we won’t do is rush him back early; so when Martyn is ready, he will be used.”

Waghorn joined the Scottish giants from Wigan Athletic, and has scored 28 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions this season.
