Leeds United are closing in on reaching an agreement with Sunderland for Liam Bridcutt.

The defensive midfielder spent the majority of last season on loan at Elland Road and has been keen to return on a permanent basis this summer.

But Leeds have struggled to agree a deal with Sunderland for the midfielder, who has a further year left to run on a lucrative contract at the Stadium of Light.

Now however, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, both clubs are close to striking an agreement.

Leeds are desperate to bag Bridcutt, while Sunderland want to move him on and the player's firm desire is to be back at Elland Road, meaning all the pieces are in place for an agreement to be reached.

However, joining Leeds would mean a reduction in salary and Bridcutt will be keen for Sunderland to help cover the financial sacrifice leaving with a year left on his contract would mean.

Bridcutt performed impressively in the Championship for Leeds last season and even forced his way back into the Scotland squad as a result.
