Ajax director of football Marc Overmars is hoping that no big clubs come in for midfielder Christian Eriksen over the summer, because he believes if no suitable offer presents itself, the Denmark international will sign a new contract at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Overmars has worked to open talks with Eriksen over extending his current deal, which expires in the summer of 2014, but the playmaker is in no rush to make a quick decision.

Eriksen has been consistently linked with some of the biggest clubs in the game, with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitting he is keeping tabs on the talented midfielder, while Liverpool are also keen, something the Ajax star has conceded he finds flattering.

Should that calibre of club not make an offer for Eriksen over the summer though, Overmars hopes he will choose to continue his footballing education in Holland.

"I think Christian will first see what clubs come in for him in the summer", Overmars told Voetbal International, when asked about the player’s possible contract extension.

"If no suitable club comes in for him, I hope he will stay at Ajax", he added.

Eriksen has clocked up a total of 96 appearances for Ajax and has picked up two Dutch Eredivisie titles at the club.

In 2010, the talented Denmark international was the youngest player at the World Cup in South Africa.
