Former Arsenal defender Sebastien Squillaci could be set for a return to his native France, with Bastia making an approach for the player, according to France Football.

Squillaci was released at the end of his contract with Arsenal this summer, having failed to seal a regular spot with the Premier League side.

The player himself had revealed in January that Marseille, Nice, Monaco, Ajaccio and Bastia had been in contact with him, amid speculation of an early exit at the time.

And it appears the latter could win the race, this despite the fact that Squillaci has previously played for both Monaco and Ajaccio, with 140 and 69 appearances respectively.

It is understood that Squillaci has met with Bastia’s leadership in Paris, and with him being a free agent they should find little opposition to a move back to France.

Squillaci had joined Arsenal from La Liga side Sevilla in 2010 and went on to play just 39 times in all competitions.

The 32-year-old France international also played for Ligue 1 side Lyon during a two-year spell that ended with his transfer to Sevilla in 2008.
