Real Madrid have not made any fresh contact for the acquisition of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, according to Madrid-based daily Marca.

Los Blancos have been keen on the purchase of the Spain international, but they have faced stiff resistance in their bid from the Red Devils, who have managed to keep the custodian at Old Trafford thus far.

Earlier in the summer, Louis van Gaal’s side wanted Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos as part of the deal to sell De Gea, but the defender stayed put at the Santiago Bernabeu and subsequently penned a new long-term deal.

De Gea’s existing contract with the Old Trafford outfit expires next summer and he has shown no inclination of signing a new deal; the Manchester giants risk losing him for free next year.

The goalkeeper is yet to make an appearance for the Red Devils this season as manager Van Gaal has left him out in favour of summer signing Sergio Romero, with a lack of focus from the Spaniard as a consequence of speculation surrounding his future the stated reason for his omission.

Real Madrid are willing to pay €5m a year in salary to the goalkeeper upon his arrival, but it still falls short of the Red Devils’ offer – they are willing to pay a total of €14m more than Los Blancos are offering.

However, financial losses notwithstanding, De Gea appears in no mood to extend his stay in the English Premier League amidst reports of a breakdown in his relationship with Van Gaal.

As the transfer window for the Spanish league closes tonight, Real Madrid may try to acquire the goalkeeper for a fee stated to be in the range of €30m to €40m.
