Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta has indicated that the Catalan club might be forced to sell Manchester United linked Neymar to balance the books.

Manchester United have been interested in the Brazil captain and Neymar's father earlier this month revealed that the Red Devils slapped in a bid to sign his son.

Barcelona rejected that offer and Neymar’s father revealed that his son also didn’t entertain any thoughts of leaving sunny Spain for a move to the north west of England.

However, the former Barcelona president feels that the situation might change soon and the club hierarchy might have to sell a superstar such as Neymar to balance the books.

Speaking to Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Laporta said: “The situation is not good and to balance the accounts at Barcelona, [club president Josep Maria] Bartomeu must sell players or other assets.

“The best solution is obviously to sell the best players. Some say he [Neymar] is interested in Manchester United’s offer, but that is a result of mismanagement at the club.”

Barcelona have insisted that Neymar is not for sale at any price and are offering him a new contract, to secure his long term future at the Camp Nou.

Laporta lost the Barcelona presidential elections to Bartomeu a few months ago and has been a vocal critic of the current club president.
