Jose Mourinho has enlisted the help of super agent Jorge Mendes to help Manchester United win the race for highly rated Basel forward Breel Embolo.

The 19-year-old has caught the eye with his performances for the Swiss champions and has been linked with another Premier League club in the shape of Tottenham Hotspur; Basel were forced to deny a deal had already been done for him to move to White Hart Lane.

It did though appear recently that Embolo was poised to move to Germany as RB Leipzig closed quickly on a deal – but the switch has broken down, offering hope for his other suitors.

Now, according to Sky Italia, Mourinho made contact with Embolo's agent, before handing the case over to his own agent, Mendes, to arrange a deal to take the Switzerland international to Old Trafford.

Mourinho is keen to have the 19-year-old at his disposal next season and the development appears to put Manchester United in pole position.

It is not clear how much Manchester United will have to pay to land Embolo, but Basel will no doubt be looking for a substantial transfer fee to part with one of their brightest prospects.

Embolo is currently in action with Switzerland at Euro 2016 and any deal for the forward may be forced to wait until after the tournament.
