Schalke are in talks with Basel over signing Manchester United target Breel Embolo from the Swiss club.

Embolo did look likely to be heading to Germany to sign for RB Leipzig, but despite lodging a bid, the club recently pulled out of the running for the forward.

Manchester United have pushed their way into the race, but there is still a possibility that Embolo may find himself playing in Germany next season as had appeared on the cards.

The destination is different though in the shape of Schalke as, according to Swiss daily Blick, the Ruhr giants are in talks with Basel over a fee for Embolo.

The figures under discussion would see Schalke offer Basel an initial fee of €20m for the 19-year-old, with further add-ons to come depending upon the player's progress in the Bundesliga.

Basel are also keen to insert a sell-on clause into any agreement with Schalke.

At present, the Ruhr giants have the lead in the race, however a lucrative offer from Jose Mourinho's Manchester United could yet throw a spanner in the works.

Embolo is currently at Euro 2016 with the Switzerland squad.
