Leeds United could still sign defender Joel Ekstrand this summer, but only on a pay-as-you-play basis, due to concerns about his fitness.

The Sweden international left Watford at the end of last season and appeared all set to link up with Garry Monk's men at Elland Road.

But medical concerns, stemming from Ekstrand's cruciate knee ligament injury in March 2015, have brought the switch to a halt.

Now, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds are only prepared to proceed on a pay-as-you-play basis.

As Ekstrand has interest from several other Championship sides and from abroad, he may be unlikely to accept such a proposal.

Ekstrand's agent has continued to insist that his client's move to Leeds is not dead and has assured the Whites that the defender's knee is in good condition.

The agent says two specialists have assessed Ekstrand's knee and are of the opinion that it is stable and the defender has full mobility.
