Liverpool have shrugged off the disappointment of losing the financial race for Willian by making contact with Marseille man Andre Ayew.

Both Liverpool and Newcastle United are interested in the Ghanaian, according to Radio Monte Carlo, who is under contract at Marseille until 2015.

Liverpool today officially admitted defeat in their pursuit of Anzhi Makhachkala's Willian, the £30m winger prompting a battle of wills between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

However, the Reds can see Ayew in their ranks for the future if they are prepared to compete with Newcastle for the €12m-rated player.

For their part, Newcastle are hoping to keep a backup option should Yohan Cabaye make an exit from St James' Park this summer.

Both clubs are understood to have been in touch over Ayew, whose tally with Ghana stands at an impressive 44 senior caps.

Marseille president Vincent Labrune had previously indicated he would let Ayew leave if a big offer came his way.

The player himself has also maintained he would find it difficult to refuse if a club of the stature of Liverpool came calling.

"I have heard that Liverpool want me", Ayew had said back in June. "If they come for me, I will say ‘yes’. I was a fan of the club in my childhood."

Ayew has been with Marseille since 2007, and has made 150 appearances with 41 goals added on.
