Leading sports lawyer Jan Kabalt believes that Wesley Sneijder may be able to cancel his contract with Inter due to the way he has been treated, news which is sure to further alert his suitors.

Sneijder finds himself out of favour at the Nerazzurri, having rejected a new contract which would cut his yearly salary from €6M to €4M.

He has been left out of coach Andrea Stramaccioni’s team until the situation is resolved, with the young Italian boss stressing that he has other options in midfield just as worthy of playing as Sneijder.

Inter president Massimo Moratti has gone on record as saying he believes the transfer market may provide the solution for both parties, in a nod to Sneijder being sold next month.

However, it remains to be seen what asking price the Nerazzurri will put on his head and the player would dramatically increase his options were he available as a free agent.

And Kabalt thinks Sneijder may have a case.

"A contract is a contract, a deal is a deal", the leading sports lawyer told Dutch daily De Telegraaf.

"That means the contract can only be terminated if the duration of the contract has expired or when both parties decide to end the contract, by mutual consent, i.e. they both want to stop", he continued.

"But there are exceptions with regards to upholding an commitment.

"Wesley has good opportunities to end his contract with Inter unilaterally.

"If in the winter transfer period no satisfactory solution is found, it is very worth him considering terminating his ongoing commitment until 2015 [when the contract ends, ed.]."

Kabalt referred then to "just cause", which provides a player with the chance to end their contract on the basis of a compelling reason.

And while it could take time for a verdict to be reached on the issue, FIFA could issue Sneijder with free agent status provisionally, with compensation only needing to be paid if the case goes against the Dutchman.

It remains likely Sneijder will leave Inter in January however. He is believed to be cold on a possible move to Fenerbahce, but Manchester United, long-time suitors of the playmaker, would surely be attractive as a destination, while Russian duo Anzhi Makhachkala and Zenit St. Petersburg are also fans of the player.
